ly once in a while some, as at Elim. God gave them a newkind of bread, called Manna. One day they came to a placewithout wells. Give us water that we may drink/ theycried to Moses. Poor Moses, how many troubles he had. Hewas such a patient man of God. Moses prayed to God, as he always did when he neededhelp. God said, Take your staff. Go to the Rock in Horeb. Iwill stand there before you. Then you shall strike the Rock.So water shall come out of it. Then the people may drink. All the people stood and looked on when Moses struck theRock. Hear, the staff rings on the Rock! Out gushes the waterin big streams. There is enough for all the people to drink.See, they come with bowls and water-pots! They are so verythirsty. Ah, I wonder if they felt ashamed that they had grumbledagainst Moses and God? Do you know what they had said?Is God with us, or not? How could they say so? God hadtaken them from Egypt. He had led them through the RedSea. But we all so quickly forget Gods goodness. Ex. 17.

BIBLE PRIMER 55 25. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AND THE GOLDEN CALF. Oh, now comes a story worth listening to. After three months the people of Israel came to a greatmountain — Sinai. You remember Gods covenant, His promise to Noah ? And the covenant with Abraham ? Now God makes a new covenant with Israel, the covenantof the Law. Come to the mountain. See these three millions of peoplegather there one morning. Moses and Joshua go up to themountain. God speaks there to Moses. Clouds and smokeare all around the mountain. Lightning and thunder fright-en the people till they tremble. Moses stays on the mountainfor forty days and nights. God speaks with Moses face toface. He shows Moses what Israel is to do to be Gods truepeople. How Moses listens to every word! Then on two tables, or tablets, of stone, God gives Mosesten commandments. This is one of the greatest gifts Godever gave men. It shows us \That we ought to do, and whatwe ought not to do. That is what commandment means. Then God said,
