The dissatisfaction hadbeen widespread; and though the leaders hadbeen slain and all active rebellion checked, yet on themorrow all the congregation of the children of Israelmurmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying.Ye have killed the people of the Lord. Doubtlessmany felt, as Dathan had, that Moses had broughtthem to no pleasant life. They forgot that it wastheir own cowardice and disobedience which were beingpunished. So they murmured; and God, seeing that punishmentmust extent yet further, sent a plague among them, so thatmany fell and died where they stood. And Moses saidunto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from offthe altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the con-gregation, and make an atonement for them: for there iswrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun.Aaron ran as he was bidden; and wherever the holy firecame, the plague was stayed. THIS rebellion of Korah must have taken place towardthe close of the forty years in the desert, for theIsraelites had apparently almost forgotten theearlier evidences that the leadership of Moses and Aaronwas ordained by God. It seemed necessary to reimpressthis; and, after the followers of Korah had been destroyed,the Lord bade Moses make another trial. From thechief prince of each tribe Moses called for a rod. Hetook these rods, including one from Aaron for the Levites,and laid them away in the tabernacle. The next morninghe brought the rods forth again before all the people, andreturned each to its owner. Then everyone saw that therod of Aaron had blossomed in the night. This was universally accepted as an endence that he andhis tribe, the Levites, were especially chosen
